The Train that Waited in the Fog

Seven strangers awaken at a nameless station, each carrying a grief they can no longer bear. As the train travels deeper into the endless fog, each passenger is confronted by memories that refuse to stay buried and temptations that promise an end to suffering. The journey offers release from grief, but only by quietly erasing the lives they have lived. To step back into the world beyond the fog, they must hold on to the memories that hurt the most, because some burdens are worth carrying if they remind us who we are.

The station had no name that anyone could read. Whatever lettering had once been painted along the fascia board above the platform had long since softened into the wood itself, leaving only faint impressions where letters had been, like words almost recalled after waking. Or words that had never quite been allowed to form.

The building itself, a low, narrow structure of dark brick and moss-furred stone, sat at the edge of a field that dissolved within thirty yards into the fog. There was a single bench on the platform, its paint the colour of old bone, and a clock above the waiting room door whose hands had settled at thirteen minutes past an hour that could not be determined. The clock face was cracked along its lower edge in a way that suggested not age but an impact, as though something had struck it from the inside.
